Khonju, Bhandari in athletics
KATHMANDU: Kanchai Maya Khonju and Rajendra Bhandari have qualified for the 16th Asian Games from athletics. Khojnu of Armed Police Force and Rajendra Bhandari of Nepal Army made in the list of the eight athletes selected on Thursday. Khonu will be competing in the 5000m race while Bhandari will represent Nepal in long distance race. The remaining six players are Keshari Chaudhary, Sabitri Chaudhary, Chandrakala Thapa, Hari Kumar Rimal, Dhirendra Chaudhary and Tilak Ram.
Rasaili in wushu
KATHMANDU: South Asian Games wushu gold medalist Raj Kumar Rasaili will be representing the country in Asian Games in Guangzhou. In the selection round, Rasaili edged Yuva Raj Gurung to confirm his berth in the 56 kgs category. He had earlier won a gold medal in 10th South Asian Games in 2006 in Sri Lanka in 52 kg weight group, he however, was deprived from competing in the 11th SAG after his preferred weight group was not included. For today’s qualifiers, Rasaili, fighting in a different group than his preferred one, had to struggle hard to down Gurung. Other making it to the cut are: Bhusan Bajracharya in 75 kg, Purushottam Rijal in 65 kg, Mangal Prasad in 60 kg, Alina Chauhdary in 52 kg, Jharna Gurung in 60 kg.
Adhikari in weightlifting
KATHMANDU: Weightlifter Kamal Bahadur Adhikari has confirmed his ticket to Guangzhou. He will be competing in the 69 kg weight category. Nepal Army’s Adhikari, who had also represented the country in the same event in the Olympics and in the Asian Games in Doha, beat his team-mate Bikash Thapa to qualify for the 16th Asian Games.
