The night scene in Kathmandu has long been dominated by live bands playing in the bars of Thamel. But thanks to the folks at Kgarira.com, all that is beginning to change.
Shoki Raj Shakya, from Kgarira.com, says that they hope to prove that “there is more to Kathmandu’s nightlife than the rock scene.”
The company plays host to a website providing information to the Capital’s party animals about upcoming events and hot night spots as well as throwing its own parties in an attempt to bring together the diverse party crowd in Kathmandu.
Their most recent event, the MTV Big Blast, took place this past Friday at the Yak and Yeti and featured popular MTV VJ Rannvijay. Rannvijay, host of hit MTV shows Roadies and Splitsvilla, took the stage to host the event alongside fellow VJ and former Miss World University Ayusha Shrestha. In addition to a mix of pop, dance and a little mainstream trance music from DJ Jay Naidu and DJ BPM, the event also featured an on-stage contest for those brave enough to take the stage to test their best pick-up lines.
Rannvijay, who came to Kathmandu for the first time last week, has made use of his limited time in the country, taking in the surrounding Valley on motorcycle trips to Nagarkot and Malekhu. Like so many other visitors who enjoy their time in Nepal, he said there was something unidentifiable about the country that just “soaks you up” and makes you feel at home.
When asked about Kathmandu’s party scene, “the warm party crowd” is one thing he said drastically differed from that of Bombay where he currently resides.
Kgarira plans to promote the emerging social scene in Kathmandu with a variety of events in the coming months, including a Volkswagen Beetle rally on Sept. 17 and another similar party in October.
