NJA picks four judokas

KATHMANDU: Four judokas, two each in men’s 73kg and women’s 63kg, made the cut today for the final phase of selection for the 16th Asian Games slated for November 12-27 in Guangzhou.

The 11th SA Games bronze winner Radha Devi Rai and Sushila Adhikari of Nepal Police Club (NPC) qualified for the women’s 52kg category while Laxmi Tamang of Kathmandu failed to make the cut here at the Central Judo Training Centre in Tripureswor.

Likewise, the 11th SA Games bronze medallist Deepak Krishna Shrestha of Multi-purpose Martial Art Centre and Raj Bahadur Chand of NPC earned qualification for the final round in men’s 73kg category. Karna Bahadur Bohara of Tribhuvan Army Club was dumped out of the qualification race.

Meanwhile, citing technical reasons, Nepal Judo Association postponed the women’s 63kg second phase selection for Wednesday. Chonu Gurung, of Kathmandu, Ranju Rai of Parsa and Debu Thapa, who braved a horrible elevator accident in Dhaka to win the 11th South Asian Games bronze medal in February, are vying for two places available for the final selection tournament.
