Poverty-stricken woman jumps to death with kids

BAJHANG: Owing to extreme poverty and starvation, a woman from Lekgaun VDC-8 committed suicide along with her two minor sons on Friday.

According to the deceased’s relatives, Sanjudevi Pujara, 35, committed suicide along with her minor children as she could not manage food for her family.

A police team confirmed the incident today after reaching the incident site, which is a two-day walk from the district headquarters.

Sanjudevi had jumped into the Majkhori River with her sons Sirme Pujara (7) and Himal Pujara (5). According to neighbours, there was no food stuff in Sanjudevi’s house for months as

she had been living in

abject poverty. Her husband had gone to India for work a year ago.

According to the police, bodies of Sanjudevi and her one son was recovered

from the river, while the body of another son is yet to be found.

According Dilliraj Bista, a local, the woman had set her hut ablaze before leaving it.

In June, Jasuli Bista of Sunkuda VDC had committed suicide after killing her two daughters due to starvation. Her husband had also gone to India for work.

A woman of district headquarter Chainpur had also jumped into the Seti River along with her son last year. Though the mother died, the son was rescued alive.
